Businesses must innovate but technology isn’t enough

Businesses are spending millions on new software and digital technologies, transforming operations and bringing them into the 21st Century. Once the investment is made, achieving a solid return on your outlay and ensuring the wider rewards are reaped, requires company wide effort. Technology on its own won’t create a drastic shift in business, there are three key aspects to be realised first:
1. Tools – finding the right technology for your business
2. Training and skills – ensuring that your employees have the skills and training to use the tools effectively
3. Management and direction – focusing the management team to lead by example

The world is now digital and digitalisation has transformed how businesses work. Operations such as day-to-day running, marketing and customer communications have been upturned, becoming more efficient and connected across all departments. Many businesses see technology as the magic key to unlocking success, but in reality, digital transformation is complex, expensive and time consuming and getting the whole business on board, can be challenging. The tools themselves are just one aspect of what is needed in order to achieve true digital transformation.

Finding the right tools
There’s no one size fits all solution when it comes to digital tools, every business is different even your competitors – so what works for them might not work for you. Don’t be taken in by case studies and recommendations, whilst they’re clearly important making sure investment is a good fit for your business is essential.

Having a clear understanding of your business goals and how new technology can help towards both the strategy and execution will make the decision process much easier and ensure you get a return on investment. Achieving ROI isn’t simply about recouping the outlay though; gaining a competitive advantage, improving day-to-day efficiency and greater customer satisfaction must all be considered alongside financial return.

Training and skills
It’s unlikely that all employees will be trained on the new system by the provider, so implementing internal training is essential – not only so that the new software can be used effectively, but so that each employee understands how it changes their job role, how information can now be shared company wide and the goals and strategies that have been put in place.

Training doesn’t end with the final slide though: post training support is an often-overlooked aspect of the coaching cycle, yet it is key to understanding both the effectiveness of training and the holes in knowledge that lead employees to slip back into previous procedures that no longer work with the new system.

Management and Direction
Uptake of any new tool won’t happen without the right working environment. Leaders lead by creating a sustainable environment which is underpinned with clear expectations on how the tools or technology should be used. The management team should scrutinise their teams to ensure they’re using the tools they’ve been provided with and that they’re being used effectively. Often this level of scrutiny can uncover issues with the new tools that mean a change in approach or process is necessary. Creating an environment where employees are motivated to use the tools and where not using them has clear consequences is essential to uptake and company wide digital transformation.

Using technology effectively with a connected digital business strategy can revolutionise working; employees have easy access to anything they need, which prevents frustrations and delays caused by information silos and communication breakdowns – in turn aiding the ability to maintain a cool blue head and make good decision-making choices! But technology alone isn’t enough, training and leadership are integral to success.
