How We Gauge Pressure Has Changed Over The Last 20 Years: NURSING

When Gazing began in 1998, the world was very different; dial-up modems still screeched through phone lines, France were poised to win the World Cup and NASA found water on the moon. A less obvious change is in the attitudes to mental skills training; now everyone from professional athletes to sales departments know the benefits of the right mental approach on performance, but the core principles remain the same and we’ve been helping businesses see the upside for two decades! We’ve worked in incredibly diverse fields to help people perform under internal and external pressure and one of the most important areas where these skills can make a difference is nursing.

Two decades of change

Nursing is a hard career and stretches across whole-of-life healthcare; nurses are vital in birth, paediatrics, serious illness, emergency triage, elderly medicine and palliative care. While the basics of nursing haven’t changed, the way nurses deliver care has been revolutionised by incredible leaps in technology and equipment, as well as jumps in understanding treatments of different illnesses and conditions, and the rise of antibiotic resistant strains of disease, such as MRSA.

There are other factors affecting nurses too, both in their day-to-day work and as a wider profession; tighter controls on funding and a reduction in the number of nursing staff being recruited has put both staff and nursing resources under greater pressure, which equates to greater pressure on individual nurses.

Planning for future pressures
As time goes on, it’s entirely likely that the challenges facing the nursing industry will continue to become more acute. As more diseases become resistant to treatment, the UK changes the way that healthcare is funded and the ageing population requires more care and support in dealing with health problems, nursing will have to respond and change to keep up.

Whatever happens, it’s no good to say that nurses ‘just have to cope’. Nursing is already a stressful profession; dealing with life and death situations and making incredibly important decisions sit alongside the external pressures of funding, facilities and equipment and the expectations of healthcare recipients and their families. This is where we believe a continued focus on having the right mental skillset will be incredibly valuable. By using the Gazing Red-to-Blue Head thinking, nurses can prevent these internal and external pressures from affecting their work and continue to make well-reasoned decisions.

Taking control of the controllable
By preventing nurses from wasting time and energy trying to correct situations they can’t control and allowing them to define and recognise what’s within their own control circle, Gazing believes nurses can implement much more effective change on how they provide care to their patients. They’re already trained to avoid panic or getting flustered in emergency situations, but the Gazing Red-to-Blue Head principle takes this further and allows nursing professionals to apply it to a range of other situations, keeping their performance at its peak in the face of pressure, no matter where it comes from.

Nursing is always going to be a profession that faces greater pressures than lots of others and maintaining a cool head is critical to good healthcare; the ideal future is one where nursing staff are fully supported in developing a high performing and effective mindset, equipping them with the mental skills to deal with not only the existing pressures, but recognising future risks and using good decision making practices to take them in their stride.
