How we gauge pressure has changed over the last 20 years: Professional sports people

When Gazing began in 1998, the world was very different; dial-up modems still screeched through phone lines, France were poised to win the World Cup and NASA found water on the moon. A less obvious change is in the attitudes to mental skills training; now everyone from professional athletes to sales departments know the benefits of the right mental approach on performance, but the core principles remain the same and we’ve been helping businesses see the upside for two decades! We’ve worked in incredibly diverse fields to help people perform under internal and external pressure and one of the most fascinating areas where these skills can make a difference is professional sports.

Two decades of change

Twenty years ago, the professional sports landscape was very different; while it’s always been uniquely reliant on physical ability, the external pressures during that time have increased incredibly. Back in 1998, only 2 Sky Sports channels were on air, the internet was in its infancy and social media as we know it was a decade away. You could see a handful of sports on TV, but if you wanted something more niche, your only option was to go see it in person.

Digital TV and the internet has greatly increased the availability of sports TV, giving international platforms to even obscure sports. This brings with it, however, a huge increase in ‘armchair pundits’ and press attention. Social media has increased athletes’ visibility, opening up professional careers to more people through sponsorship opportunities while at the same time increasing the importance of sports stars being seen as positive role models. Couple all of this with fickle fans who can say anything from behind the anonymity of a keyboard and more and more sports review websites and all of a sudden it becomes a high pressure environment.

Planning for future pressures
As sport becomes more popular and people transition into semi-pro and then professional, the challenges become more acute. As well as external pressures, an intensified playing field means injuries or ‘off days’ become an opportunity for competitors to exploit. The pressure to consistently perform at the top 10% of your game can push some into performance enhancing drugs, either to gain an advantage or to extend a career when fighting off younger, fresher competitors.

All these pressures focus the attention on the need for cohesive coaching – that is, integrating all skills into coaching, be it technical, physical, mental or even things like PR training to manage social media profiles. The integration of mental skills is essential to ensure sports people can cope with whatever the future may bring, be it a move from semi-pro to professional, injury, press scrutinization or high profile wins or losses.

Taking control of the controllable
Every athlete trains and perfects technical and physical abilities from a young age, but it’s not so for mental skills. Mental toughness is essential for all sports people, not just ‘on field’ but at all times. Many aspects of their career are actually out of their control, such as funding or press attention, but by concentrating on the factors they can control, Gazing believes this increases their success both on and off field. Fighting back after injury involves strict training regimes, but the Gazing Red-to-Blue-Head principle extends this to a range of other situations, such as recognising when pressure is affecting performance, recovering from a bad decision or using stress as a tool, no matter where it comes from. Sports coaches have a responsibility to create an environment where pressure is embraced not ignored and feared.

Professional sports have always been scrutinized by fans and the press and it’s not uncommon to see sports stars melting down, yet cohesive coaching isn’t yet commonplace. The ideal future is one where all sports people are supported to develop an effective mindset in exactly the same scientific manner as they are their technical and physical skills, equipping them with the mental skills to deal with not only existing and known pressures, but also ones that emerge when they least expect it.
